College of Charleston tops Georgia Southern, 1-0,

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. -- Tyler Beckstead's goal off a deflection from about 22 yards out with 6:24 left in the match lifted the College of Charleston to a 1-0 win over Georgia Southern in men's Southern Conference soccer action before a rain-soaked crowd of nearly 200 at Patriots Point Field on Tuesday.

With the win the Cougars improved to 6-4-1 overall and 2-1-0 in league play. The Eagles fell to 2-9-0 and 1-2-0.

After a scoreless opening 45 minutes in which both teams had five shots, each team had scoring opportunities but neither could finish until the game's final moments.

Beckstead blasted home the game-winner after a shot from Tony Myers deflected off GSU goalie Garret Lazenby. Beckstead's second goal of the season found the back right corner of the net.

For the game, the Cougars held an 11-7 advantage in shots and 4-0 in corner kicks.

Georgia Southern plays host to Furman at 1:00 on Saturday. The Cougars are in action again on Saturday, October 19th when they play at Furman at 5:00.

Virginia Tech Rallies to Defeat UNC Greensboro
Jonmaire, Rogge key victory over Spartans
BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men's soccer team erased a two-goal deficit and rallied to defeat UNC Greensboro Tuesday afternoon on Moseley Field. Redshirt sophomore Ken Jonmaire (East Aurora, N.Y.) and freshman Peer Rogge (Schleswig, Germany) factored in on all three scores for the Hokies en route to the 3-2 victory. With the win, Tech improves to 6-5-1 on the year as UNC Greensboro falls to 5-5-0 overall.

The Hokies jumped on the board in the seventh minute on a header by Jonmaire. A UNCG foul resulted in a Tech direct kick and senior Rob Smith (Greenville, S.C.) connected with Rogge. Rogge the fed Jonmaire who netted the first goal of the game giving Tech a 1-0 advantage.

The Spartans responded with two goals in a five-minute span to give UNCG a 2-1 lead at halftime. In the 34th minute of play, UNCG midfielder James Goodman made a run from midfield and split the Hokies' defense with a perfect pass to senior Cliff Patterson. Patterson one-timed the ball into the back of the net before the Tech goalkeeper could react knotting the score at 1-1.

In the 38th minute, Patterson and the Spartans struck again. UNCG senior and leading scorer, Chris Goos played a corner kick right to Patterson who headed the ball into the goal for his second score of the afternoon.

With UNCG holding a 2-1 advantage, the Hokies rallied to tie the game in the 71st minute of the match. On a one-on-one, Rogge beat the UNCG defender and fired a shot to the lower right hand corner for his third goal of the season.

Rogge had to leave the game due to an injury with 7:43 remaining, but thanks to the crafty work of the men's soccer trainer, Jesse Donnenwerth, Rogge was able to return to the lineup.

Just 10 seconds after Rogge's return to the lineup in the 87th minute, senior Greg Medsker (Fredricksburg, Va.) played a goal kick to midfield. Rogge won the ball and flicked a header to a streaking Jonmaire who completed the come-from-behind victory.

"We needed a win after last Saturday's loss," head coach Oliver Weiss stated. "I am very happy for the boys. You can preach and tell them all you want, but if the results aren't showing up then the belief starts desinigrating. We came to play today. It wasn't always pretty, but we played to the end."

Tech goalkeeper Chase Harrison (Huntington, W.Va.) made six saves in the victory, while the UNCG keeper, Jay Benfield, made five stops.
