SoCon Names Football Players of the Week, Oct. 8, 2002

SPARTANBURG, SC - The Southern Conference today named its football players of the week for games played on Saturday, October 5. Wofford halfback Jesse McCoy was named the Offensive Player of the Week, linebacker Josh Cain was named the Defensive Player of the Week and Wofford linebacker Jim Thurman was the Freshman of the Week.

McCoy, a 5-10, 195-pound senior from Acworth, GA, scored three touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime, in a 27-21 win over Chattanooga on Saturday. McCoy rushed for 121 yards on 13 carries, an average of 9.3 yards per carry. He compiled 166 yards of total offense and had touchdown runs of three and 12 yards as well as a 45-yard touchdown reception. McCoy went over the 2,000 yard mark for career rushing yards during the game.

Cain, a 6-1, 227-pound senior from Sequatchie, TN, recorded 22 tackles including 16 solo stops, in the Mocs' 27-21 overtime loss at Wofford on Saturday. Cain had one tackle behind the line of scrimmage and had 10 tackles in the first half. He has now recorded 10 or more tackles in six straight games this season and seven consecutive games dating back to last year. This also marked Cain's third career effort of 20 or more tackles. He now is second in the school record book for career stops with 414.

Thurman, a 6-2, 225 inside linebacker from Hixson, TN, had 10 tackles including eight solos, in Wofford's win over UTC. He also recovered two fumbles including one in overtime that halted the Mocs' first scoring opportunity.

Also receiving consideration on offense was Georgia Southern quarterback Chaz Williams who rushed for 127 yards in GSU's 52-7 win over VMI; Western Carolina running back Fred Boateng who rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns against Furman; Furman quarterback Billy Napier who completed 15 of 22 passes for a career-high 252 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Western Carolina; and Citadel quarterback Jeff Klein who threw for 335 yards against Wyoming. Also receiving strong consideration on the defensive side was Appalachian State defensive end K.T. Stovall who had 11 tackles including three sacks in the Mountaineers' 29-10 win at East Tennessee State.
