Helle Named Head Coach of Wofford Volleyball Program

SPARTANBURG, SC - Athletic Director Richard Johnson recently announced the hiring of Corey Helle to the position of Head Volleyball Coach at Wofford. Helle, who will enter his fourth year with the Lady Terriers this fall, served as the program's associate head coach during the 2001 season. He succeeds 27-year coaching veteran Joe Bowman in the role.

"I am excited, honored and humbled to be named Head Women's Volleyball Coach at such a prestigious school as Wofford," Helle said. "I am grateful to Coach Bowman for bringing me here three years ago and giving me the chance to mature as a coach, administrator, and as a man. He has, and will continue to be a great role model for me. Under his leadership, I have seen this program improve dramatically-- both on the court and in the classroom. In my estimation, we have the finest group of female student-athletes in the country, and that is a direct reflection on Joe Bowman.

"I also want to thank [former athletic director] Dr. David Wood and Coach Richard Johnson for having continued faith in me. I believe this will be a smooth transition for everybody in the Wofford community, and I look forward to the new opportunities and challenges that await me."

Helle first came to Wofford before the 1999 season. He received the promotion to associate head coach before the beginning of the 2001 season. Previously, he had spent two years each working at Furman University and the University of South Carolina. Helle began his coaching career while still a student at the University of Nebraska, under the tutelage of legendary coach Terry Pettit. As an assistant, Helle has helped guide his teams to a combined 253-100 record. This includes a 17-15 season last fall at Wofford, the Lady Terriers' highest win total since their move to Division I in 1995.

Helle is also active in the Club South Junior Olympic Volleyball Club. He serves as technical director over the entire club and is the head coach of the top team -- 18 Elite. Club South has over 175 area families involved and 20 area coaches. One of Helle's first club teams, Lincoln Sports Courts, finished second in the country and had three players receive All-American honors.

A native of Princeton, Ill., Helle graduated from Nebraska with a bachelor's degree in history.
