VMI Wrestling Wins at George Mason, 23-15 (Jan. 10)

FAIRFAX, VA -- The VMI wrestling team improved its record to 2-2 on Thursday evening by, defeating George Mason (1-3) by a score of 23-15 at John Linn Memorial Gymnasium.

After losing the first match, VMI junior 157-pounder Adam Britt (Mechanicsville, Va./ Atlee) defended his No. 16 Intermat ranking by scoring a technical fall over GMU's Richard Appau, 21-5 in 6:30. The win put VMI ahead, 5-3.

After losing the 165-pound bout, junior Matt Erwin (South Vienna, Ohio/ St. Paris Graham), ranked No. 17 by Intermat scored a forfeit, putting VMI up 11-6, a lead that the Keydets would not relinquish.

VMI would extend the lead to 17-9 with wins by 184 lb. sophomore Jason Cox (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) and sophomore heavyweight David Walker (Chesapeake, Va./ Great Bridge). Cox defeated Nick Webster, 11-5; while Walker was victorious over Sandy Ailor, 5-1.

The Keydets clinched the match when senior Oliver Ruiz (Fairview, N.J./ Cliffside Park) took a forfeit at the 133 lb. slot, giving VMI a 23-12.

VMI will compete at the East Stroudsburg Warrior Duals on Saturday and will face Maryland, American and the host Warriors. Action begins at 11 a.m.
