Women's Basketball 8/6/2001 4:23:00 AM Southern Conference UNC Greensboro Basketball Travels to Europe GREENSBORO, NC -- The UNC Greensboro men's and women's basketball teams will travel abroad for the first time in school history with a 13-day trip to Norway and Sweden, August 5-17. Both teams will play a total of five exhibition games against national and professional teams."It's a tremendous opportunity for our program," said men's head coach Fran McCaffrery. "It gives an opportunity for Nathan Popp, Tizzo Johnson, James Maye, and Luke Boythe, all coming off injuries, to get playing time and see where they are. It's also a tremendous learning experience to learn about the history and to see two foreign countries. It's something each of our players will remember for the rest of their lives. This team has great potential for next season, and this trip should help them bond together even more and help us maximize the team's performance for next season.""I think we have an outstanding opportunity in athletics to provide an educational experience for the teams, and that's one of the great thrills about taking the team to Norway and Sweden," said women's head coach Lynne Agee. "Obviously, when you have a chance to do a trip like this prior to the school year, you have an opportunity for team bonding, and our rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors will all have a chance to become a unit themselves with a lot of playing time. The trip will also be a great reward for our graduated senior class, which was so instrumental in our success the last four years."The Spartans will begin the trip with a 10-day stay in Norway, that includes stops in Olso, Lillehammer, Bergen, and Stalheim. While in Norway, the men will play games against the Bergen Bulldogs on August 8, the Olso Kings on August 12, and the Asker Aliens on August 13. The women will take on Grimle Basket, the reigning Norwegian Champions, on August 8. They will then play the Norwegian National Team in back-to-back games on August 12-13.The teams will travel to Sweden from August 14-17, staying in Stockholm. Two games are scheduled for this portion of the trip, with both teams playing Solna on August 15, followed by games against the Swedish National Team on August 16.The Spartan men's team, the defending Southern Conference Champions, will dress 11 players for the trip, including the 2001 SoCon Freshman of the Year, guard Jay Joseph, along with All-Conference seniors Courtney Eldridge and David Shuck. UNCG finished the year 19-12, and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the second time in five years. The UNCG women will bring all 14 players off last year's 22-8 squad, which set a new school record for wins and finished runner-up at the SoCon Tournament. Graduated senior point guard ChoRhonda Gwaltney, the first three-time All-Conference selection in school history, will play with the team for the final time on the trip, and is joined by seniors Brianne Dodgen, Samika Foster, and Sandi Reid, all three All-SoCon Tournament second team selections.During the Norway-Sweden trip, be sure to visit the official UNCG website (www.uncgspartans.com). The website will have daily pictures, student-athlete diaries, game stories, and other information from the trip.
