Women's Basketball 8/13/2001 3:44:00 PM Southern Conference UNCG Day Seven and Day Eight Reports Day Eight Oslo, Norway -Both basketball teams post victories today, move to 2-0 on its Norway schedule. Sandi Reid Today we actually were able to sleep in until 8 or 8:30 am before we had to be down at breakfast. When we finally did get downstairs, which was at 9 am, we were told that we didn't have to be downstairs until 10:30 am, because our walk to the resistance museum was canceled since it didn't open until 11 am, and we needed to leave at 12:15 pm for our game today. After receiving that news, I do believe most of us (I might as well say all of us) were happy to hear it because that gave us at least an extra hour to sleep. 10:30 am came and everyone met in the breakfast room. We were actually able to have waffles even though we had to make them ourselves. Along with waffles we were able to choose from eggs, miniature weenies, sliced oranges, different kinds of hams and other types of pastas, fruits, and drinks. This is pretty much what we eat for breakfast every morning and dinner every night. But that's okay, at least we do get to eat! After breakfast we all went back to our rooms to get ready for our 2 pm game. We left the hotel around 12:25 to go to the gym. The Game We started this game off on a good foot, or maybe I should say on two good feet; meaning offensively and defensively. We came out strong and ready to play. I felt that our team had good chemistry on the floor, or as Coach (Lynne) Agee would say, "we were feeling the flow of the game." Coming back into the game from half-time, things started out kind of slow. We starting turning the ball over more than we wanted to, but thank God that only lasted for about a minute. Personally, I was satisfied with how the game went. I was proud and glad at how we played together as a team. It just felt so good with how things were following and how we looked for each other on the floor today. If we continue to play together like a team the way we did today, I'm sure that we can win by 20 points in every game that we play. After the game, we stayed and cheered the guys on in their game, like they did for us, though theirs was a close one. Both games were finally over, so we all loaded the bus and came back to the hotel. After taking showers and putting on casual clothes, we all met back in the lobby and headed out to TGI Friday's for dinner. Boy, we were happy when we heard that we were going to TGI Friday's. And when I say "happy", I mean "HAPPY!" We were so glad that we did not have to eat hotel food again. Most of the group ordered the Friday burger that came with fries. For myself, I ordered the Blackened Chicken Pasta, with mushrooms. It tasted pretty good, but it didn't have that alfredo taste that it has back home! After dinner, everyone stopped to get ice cream and then headed back to the hotel. We just hung out and talked with others played cards. To my family and all other families that have children here with me, we all love and miss you, and can't wait to see you again. Day Seven Oslo, Norway: A city tour of Oslo highlights the Spartans' sixth day in Norway. David Schuck Had breakfast buffet at hotel, then went on a three-hour city tour of Oslo. It was real neat, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and spoke very good English. We saw the palace where the royal family lives, a centuries old castle, and the Gestapo headquarters during World War II. We stopped at the park in Oslo, where Luke (Boythe), Fitz(Brian FitzGerald) and I took pictures and just took in the bronze sculptures. Next, we went up to the ski jump stadium, Holmenkollen, where the 1952 Olympics were held. This was a great view. We all went into a ski simulator that was very realistic. After our tours, we had lunch at McDonalds (same group), then had practice for two hours at the Norwegian national training site. After dinner, Luke and I went to TGI Friday's for desert on the main strip in Oslo to celebrate my birthday, I'm 22 today. The strip was packed with people, and there was a lot going on. Tomorrow we're gong to the WWII resistance museum. We also play the Oslo Kings, the Norwegian first division champion last year. Hello to my parents and my grandmother, I hope you get well soon. I miss you and love you Jamie, and Luke loves you Melissa. Megan Honeycutt Today we woke up around 8 am to eat breakfast and board the bus for our morning sightseeing of Oslo. This was a diffcult trip for most of us because we all hit the sack around 3 am last night. Even though we were all a little heavy-eyed staying up, it was well worth it. A few of us walked around Oslo and hit some of the shopping malls before they closed. Then, later on in the evening, both the men's and women's teams stayed downstairs in the hotel to help celebrate Tayesha's (the men's team manager) 21st birthday. It was a blast! After eating breakfast this morning, and trying to hold our heads up from lack of sleep, we took a bus ride to Frogner Park. This is where Gustav Vigeland's famous stark sculptures are placed. They were all really unique and beautiful works of art. We saw all kinds of different people, portraying the many different feelings and emotions of life. All of the sculptures were very detailed and original. Our next stop was at Holmenkollen. Here we got an up close look at where Olympian skiers have performed ski jumping. It was an incredible site. Most of us also got to experience first hand what it is like to be an Olympic skier, by riding in the ski simulator. It was an electronic machine that you sat down in and it made you feel like you were really out on the slopes. We then left and rode around the city. We got to see the national theater and the City Hall. After the bus ride, it was straight to Burger King for lunch. It was so awesome to eat American food. Fish, cheese, bread, and lunch meat is starting to get a little old everyday! When lunch was over, both teams had practice for two hours. For the women's team, we are hoping to improve our performance from the other night and knock off a strong Norwegian team. After practice we all come back to the hotel, showered, and went to dinner. It was the usual, once again! Except this time we did have some pasta. The rest of the evening was spent playing cards and cruising around the streets of Oslo. It is so nice here. It almost reminds me of a mini New York City. Well, I need to run, the Sandman is calling me!
