Davidson at North Carolina Intercollegiates
CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Senior Smyth Bitter finished seventh overall and sophomore Jimmy Swansbrough finished 22nd overall as the women' and men's
cross country teams competed at the North Carolina Intercollegiate Championships on Oct. 14.
As of Saturday evening team scores were unable, however finishing in the top seven for the Wildcats on the afternoon were Bitter (7th, 19:03), Colleen Faes (23rd, 19:40), Jenna Kruppa (28th, 19:57), Laura Puckett (32nd, 20:03),
Emily Einstein (34th, 20:15), Brooke Kittinger (37th, 20:20), and Liz Gross (42nd, 20:26).
The mens' team finished fifth in the field of 11 teams with 148 points. Following Swansbrough in the top seven were Brad Becken (29th, 27:00),
Andrew Schoewe (33rd, 27:26), Chris Schmader (39th, 27:45), Colby Broadwater (44th, 28:00), Dave Runge (48th, 28:14) and Keith Chapman (48th, 28:49)
Next up for cross country is the 2000 Southern Conference Championships in Boone, N.C. hosted by Appalachian State University on October 28.
Western Carolina Hosts North Carolina Intercollegiate
Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina's women's team finished third overall in the N.C. Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships,
Saturday, October 14, 2000.
Sophomore Melanie Cooper led the way for the Lady Cats finishing sixth overall with a time of 18:55. Following Cooper was sophomore Whitney Woods who placed 14th recording a time of 19:24.
The women finished third of 12 teams. UNC Asheville won the event with Duke finishing second.
Sophomore Jesse Norman, who placed 10th overall with a time of 26:12, led the men. Freshman Philip Ramsey finished in 41st place with a
time of 27:50.
The men's team placed seventh of 11 teams competing with Chapel Hill taking first and Duke placing second.
Chattanooga Hosts Invitational
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---Chattanooga cross country runner Gina Recher won her third race in four meets Saturday, Oct. 14 at the Chattanooga Invitational a Mocassin Bend.
Recher ran the 5,000-meter course in 18:19. The sophomore from Knoxville, Tenn., also finished first in the UTC Open Sept. 8 and the Adidas/Powerade Invitational Sept. 16. Last weekend, she placed second at the University
of Georgia meet.
Recher and her teammates were edged by Vanderbilt in the team standings, 27 to 28. Vanderbilt placed four runners from third through sixth place, while the Lady Mocs had four in the top eight. UAB finished third with 74 points.
"We had a great effort today," UTC head coach Bill Gautier said. "We just barely missed beating a good Vanderbilt team. We were missing one of our top runners, but Channel Lemon picked up the slack for us and turned in a strong eighth-place run. It was also nice to see Andrea Davis run well in her last home meet."
UTC freshman Kate Brunk did not run in the meet because of shin splints. Senior Andrea Davis crossed in second place in a time of 18:21. Other UTC finishers included Amy Doolittle in seventh at 19:08, Lemon in eighth at 19:10 and Bobbie Jo Davis in 10th at 19:20.
Vanderbilt was paced by Lauren Price's third-place time of 18:50. Kylene Kownurko was fourth in 18:51, and Jocelyn Theriault ran fifth at 18:58. UAB's top finisher was Andrea Burdett who placed 11th in 19:32.
Heather Stone, a native of Chattanooga and a member of Sewanee's team, ran unattached and finished in 18:09. Stone's run was an exhibition and did not figure into the individual results.
The Lady Mocs have two weeks to prepare for the Southern Conference Championships which will be held Oct. 28 in Boone, N.C.

Furman Hosts Invitational
GREENVILLE, South Carolina--The 28th Annual Furman Invitational Cross Country Meet was paced by The University of Kentucky men and the Wake Forest women in the Collegiate Open race, on Saturday. The event included 44 High School boys' teams, 34 High School girls' teams, 27 College men's teams, and 32 College women's teams. The Furman men finished ninth overall in the 8k, while the women placed sixth in the 5k race.
The Junior Varsity Boys' and the Varsity Girls' races were won by Brookwood High School, while the J.V. Girls race was won by Grayson H.S., and the Varsity Boys' race by Farragut High School.
The University of Kentucky men were paced by Thomas Morgan's sixth place finish and Hunter Spencer's 12th place finish, while Clemson (2nd), was led by David Adams' tenth place finish. The Furman men were once again led by Tim Briles, who finished 9th overall with a 25:51 time. The men's
race included 235 runners.
The Women's college open race belonged to Wake Forest behind the lead of Sara Day's second place,17:34 finish. Wake Forest ended the race with five runners in the top 20. The Furman women were led by Jill Braley's ninth place finish, posting a time of 18:18. The women's race included 242 total runners.
The Furman Cross Country teams will be in action again on Saturday October 28th, at the Southern Conference Championships in Boone, NC.
