Appalachian runner earns fifth All-America honor.
EUGENE, Ore. -- Appalachian State University senior Mary Jayne Harrelson (Timberlake, N.C.) added another All-American honor to her lengthy list of awards with a second-place finish in the 800-meter run at the 2001 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Oregon.
The 1999 NCAA 1500m national champion Harrelson, now a five-time All-American, ran the 800m race in 2:03.10 finishing second behind national champion Brigita Langerholc of Southern Cal.
The 1999 and 2001 Southern Conference Female Athlete-of-the-Year, Harrelson competes in her final collegiate performance Saturday night at 9 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time in the 1500m finals.
Harrelson's second-place clocking earned Appalachian eight team points and ranks ASU 11th in the overall team scoring. Fellow senior Kirsten Bowden (Conover, N.C.) is presently competing in the triple jump finals
