Mucerino Named Baseball Assistant at College of Charleston

Charleston, S.C. -- Gregg Mucerino, who worked two seasons at the College of Charleston (1997-98), begins his second stint as an assistant coach with the Cougars, coach John Pawlowski announced on June 11.

Mucerino, 32, rejoins the Cougars staff after spending the past three seasons at The Citadel. His duties will include recruiting, as well as tutoring Cougar hitters and infielders, along with handling the third base coach duties. Mucerino replaces Jeff Massey who resigned last month.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to continue coaching the game I love," said Mucerino, who hit .385 as a senior at Florida International University and played three seasons in the San Diego Padres organization.

"I've been blessed in that I've been able to work at two great institutions, and for two of the top coaches in the college game in coach (Fred) Jordan, and now John Pawlowski.

"I thank Coach Jordan and The Citadel for the opportunity they gave me three years ago. The challenge of working at the College of Charleston, and as the team's third base coach will only enhance my coaching career."

"I interviewed him two years ago and hired Jeff," Pawlowski said. "Now with Jeff moving on, and with the job Gregg did at The Citadel, I felt like it was a good fit. He's an excellent recruiter and did an outstanding job working with hitters over there (Citadel)."

During his previous tenure with the Cougars, under then coach Ralph Ciabattari, the school set a number of offensive statistical records. Charleston hit a combined .314 as a team during Mucerino's two seasons, including a school-record .321 average during the 1998 campaign. He was instrumental in the signing of all-Southern Conference performers Billy Colome (2b) and Ronny Marmol (c), and left-handed pitcher Donato Calandriello who had a school-record 109 strikeouts in 1998.

Colome, who earned third team All-American honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association in 1999, is the school's career-leader with 82 stolen bases in just two seasons, while his .384 career batting average stands as the second highest in school history.

Mucerino helped FIU to a 1991 NCAA Tournament appearance while earning all-Trans America Athletic Conference honors as a first baseman. Mucerino, who was drafted by the San Diego Padres, spent the 1992 season as a member of the Charleston (SC) Rainbows.

After his time with the Padres, Mucerino played for the Tri-City Posse (Pasco, Wash.) of the Independent Western Baseball League in 1995 for former Chicago Cubs manager and current third base coach of the Baltimore Orioles Tom Trebelhorn. Mucerino graduated from the University of Miami (FL) in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in business administration.

Following coaching stints at the high school and American Legion levels in Florida, Mucerino returned to Charleston and began his collegiate coaching career with the Cougars.

He is a 1987 graduate of Westminster Christian High School in Miami, FL, the same school that produced Texas Rangers' all-star Alex Rodriguez. Mucerino is married to the former Yvette Marshall of Santa Rosa, Calif. and the couple has a daughter, Gabriella (3).
