Harrelson To Try For National Title Friday Night '99 NCAA 1500 winner will try for a second national title

EUGENE, Ore. Four-time All-American and 1999 1500m NCAA national champion Mary Jayne Harrelson (Timberlake, N.C.) ran to a third-place finish in the second heat of two 1500m semifinals at the 2001 Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Harrelson finished third in her heat with a time of 4-minutes, 19.66-seconds. The two-time Southern Conference Female Athlete-of-the-Year finished 21 hundredths of a second behind heat winner and 2001 NCAA indoor mile champ ion Tracy Robertson of Arkansas.

With the top four finishers in each heat automatically advancing to the finals, the 23-time Southern Conference champion cruised to third place with the sixth-fastest time overall in the two heats. Friday, Harrelson is scheduled to compete in the women's 800m finals just after 9:00 p.m. (EDT). Saturday, she wraps up her meet in the 1500m finals Saturday at 9:00 p.m. in the 1500m finals.

Harrelson and fellow senior Kirsten Bowden (Conover, N.C.) are the lone rep resentatives of the Southern Conference competing in the NCAA Championships at the University of Oregon in Eugene, OR. Bowden who is ranked 20th in the triple jump, is set to be one of 23 athletes competing Friday night.
