Southern Conference Softball Championship - GAME ONE
#4 UNC Greensboro Edges #5 East Tennessee State 1-0 in Eight

CHATTANOOGA, TN -- UNC Greensboro's Kim Benningfield singled in the bottom of the eighth inning to edge East Tennessee State, 1-0 in game one of the Southern Conference Softball Championship at Jim Frost Stadium in Chattanooga, TN. The Spartans go to 31-25 as the Bucs fall to 14-34. UNCG's Amanda Johnson reached on a throwing error in the eighth inning and Leigh Irwin moved her to third on an sacrifice bunt. Benningfield then drove Johnson in on a single into center field to give UNCG the win. Amy Poole (13-11) took the win for UNCG as Tiffany Vandergriff (11-18) took the loss. The Spartans will face the winner of Chattanooga/Appalachian State with the Bucs taking on the loser of the UTC/ASU matchup. UNCG will play at 2:00 on Friday, May 4 with ETSU playing at 10:00am.

Southern Conference Softball Championship - GAME TWO
#1 Chattanooga Edges #8 Appalachian State 1-0

CHATTANOOGA, TN -- Chattanooga's Angela Brewer blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to propel the Lady Mocs to a 1-0 win over Appalachian State in the first round of the 2001 Sonic Southern Conference Softball Tournament.

The close game saw only six hits as Talya Trudell notched 10 strikeouts on the afternoon while improving to 18-7 on the year. Applachian State's Jordan Arnold recorded three strikeouts while falling to 9-13. Brewer led the Lady Mocs by going 2 for 3 on the afternoon. The Lady Mocs will face UNC Greensboro tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. Appalachian State will play East Tennessee State at 10:00 a.m. in the first elimination game of the tournament.

Southern Conference Softball Championship - GAME THREE
#2 Furman Edges #7 UNC Wilmington, 2-1

CHATTANOOGA, TN -- Furman's Kelly Jack scored on a sacrifice fly by Caroline Evans in the bottom of the seventh to take a 2-1 win over No. 6 seeded UNC Wilmington in the first round of the 2001 Sonic Southern Conference Softball Tournament.

In the third one-run game of the opening day of the tournament, offense was scarce as the two teams only managed seven hits on the afternoon. Furman was led by Jack, who went 2 for 3 on the day including the game-winning run. With the win, Furman improves to 26-27 on the season while UNC Wilmington falls to 20-33.

The Paladins will face the winner of the Georgia Southern/College of Charleston tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. UNC Wilmington will face the loser of Georgia Southern/College of Charleston at Noon tomorrow in the second elimination game of the tournament.

Southern Conference Softball Championship - GAME FOUR
#3 Georgia Southern Escapes #6 College of Charleston 6-4

CHATTANOOGA, TN -- Georgia Southern's Tabitha Robinson went 2 for 3 with a homerun to lead the Lady Eagles to a 6-4 win over College of Charleston in game four of the 2001 Sonic Southern Conference Softball Tournament at Jack Frost Stadium in Chattanooga, TN. Georgia Southern improves to 23-31 with College of Charleston dropping to 22-32.

The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the first inning before Georgia Southern got on the board with one run in the bottom of the second. CofC took a 3-1 lead off a single from Martha McCall but the Lady Eagles took the 4-3 lead in the fourth inning when Robinson hit a three-run homer . Charleston tied the game at four apiece in the top of the sixth off a sacrifice bunt from Lindsay Ellis. GSU answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring two off a homerun from Janice Savage for the win.

Pitcher Aimee Littlejohn (6-4) picked up the win for GSU with six strikeouts. Charleston's reliever Kenzie Kohler (8-13) took the loss for the Cougars, going three innings and giving up two earned runs. Georgia Southern will face the Furman on Friday at 4:00pm in game 8. College of Charleston will take on UNC Wilmington at Noon in the second elimination game of the day.
