McGillan Joins C of C Hoops Staff


CHARLESTON, SC - Marty McGillan, a 10-year veteran of college basketball coaching, has been named assistant men's basketball coach at the College of Charleston, Cougar coach John Kresse announced Tuesday.

McGillan, 37, joins the Cougars after spending the past four seasons as an assistant coach and top recruiter at The Citadel for coach Pat Dennis. He assisted in all phases of The Citadel basketball program while working primarily with the Bulldogs' post players.

He served as an assistant coach at Coastal Carolina during the 1996-97 season. Prior to his stint with the Chanticleers, he worked as an assistant at East Carolina from 1991 -1996.

In 1993, McGillan helped ECU to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament championship and the school's first NCAA Tournament appearance in 21 years.

A native of Silver Spring, MD, McGillan got his start in coaching at Cape Fear Academy in Wilmington before working as an assistant coach at USC-Salkehatchie from 1990-91.

"This is a tremendous opportunity, and I'm anxiously looking forward to the wonderful challenge that Coach Kresse and the College of Charleston has presented to me." said McGillan. "My ultimate goal is to become a head coach and I've fortunate to have had the opportunity to work at two prestigious institutions here in Charleston. Coach (Pat) Dennis and The Citadel were great to me and my family.

You build relationships with coaches and players and that's what made the decision a tough one. I wasn't easy telling the players at The Citadel about the move, but that's part of the business."

"I have followed Marty's career with his background from Coastal Carolina, USC-Salkehatchie, East Carolina and The Citadel," added Kresse, who owns a 539-134 record in 22 seasons at CofC. "He's been most impressive through his coaching and recruiting skills and will bring a wealth of NCAA Division I experience to our program."

McGillan earned a bachelor of arts degree in Parks and Recreation Management from UNC Wilmington in 1990. He is married to the former Tee Nagle of Baltimore, MD, and the couple has two sons, Riley (7) and Tate (5).
