Harrelson Sets Ga. Tech Track Record

BOONE, N.C. -- Four-time all-American and 1999 NCAA 1500m national champion Mary Jayne Harrelson (Timberlake, N.C.) set a track record on her way to winning the 1500m run at the Georgia Tech Invitational, Friday, May 18.

In her final race prior to the NCAA championships, Harrelson crossed the 1500m line first in 4:15.96. Her time was nearly four-tenths of a second faster than the former record of 4:16.32.

Already ranked as the fastest collegiate 1500m runner in the nation, Harrelson finished nearly four seconds ahead of her nearest competition. She was eight and a half seconds ahead of the closest collegian.

In an event where athletes were attempting to meet minimal standards to qualify for the NCAA championships, ASU's 23-time SoCon champion was more than three seconds faster than the NCAA's automatic qualifying time.

The Southern Conference's 1999 Female Athlete of the Year Harrelson owns the league records in the 800m, 1500m and 3000m outdoors.

The 2001 NCAA championships are set to take place May 30-June 2 at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
