Game Four

Hancock Sets Southern Conference Tournament Record With 20 Strikeouts

CHARLESTON, S.C. Junior lefthander Rodney Hancock fanned a Southern Conference Tournament record 20 Furman batters, leading The Citadel to a 3-0 victory over the Paladins in Game Four of the 1999 Wendy's / Pepsi-Cola Southern Conference Baseball Tournament on Wednesday at Riley Park in Charleston, SC.

Hancock broke the previous mark of 18 set by The Citadel's Britt Reames against Marshall in 1995. The 20 strikeouts is also a new mark for most strikeouts in an entire tournament, with Reames' 18 also the former mark in that category. Hancock also established a new school single-game mark, eclipsing Mike Cherry's standard of 19 set in 1983 against Augusta.

Hancock allowed only two hits and walked a pair in raising his record to 10-4 on the season. Furman manufactured its only threat against Hancock in the top of the third when the Paladins loaded the bases with one out on a single by Justin Maderer, a double off the bat of Brent Coyner and a walk to Jody Wade. But Hancock fanned James Bright and Tommy John to end the inning.

Hancock retired 19 in a row before issuing a two-out walk to John in the ninth. He then struck out Chris Valdes to end the contest.

Hancock, who moved into sixth place on The Citadel's all-time strikeout chart with 256, struck out the side four times in the game.

The top-seeded Bulldogs scored the only runs they would need in the bottom of the second. Daryl Byrd was hit by a pitch from Furman losing pitcher Toby David (3-8) and then stole second. Jay Morgan doubled to right to give The Citadel the lead, and Aaron Haigler followed with another two-base hit to put the Bulldogs in front 2-0.

David held The Citadel in check until the seventh when the Bulldogs added an insurance run. Michael Harris singled, was sacrificed to second by Chris Morris, stole third and scored on a passed ball by Furman catcher Maderer. David walked one and struck out seven in tossing a complete game for the Paladins.

Morris' stolen base in the first inning set a new league single-season record at 51.

The Bulldogs advance to the 7:30 p.m. winners bracket game against East Tennessee State, while Furman falls into the 1:00 p.m. losers bracket game against UNC Greensboro.
