Wrestling 3/13/2001 7:43:00 AM Southern Conference The Citadel's Steers Selected For NCAA Position CHARLESTON, SC - Ed Steers, The Citadel's Director of NCAA Compliance and Academic Services, has been selected to evaluate the officials at the 2001 NCAA Wrestling Championships, hosted by the University of Iowa, March 15-17."This is a big honor for me to attend the NCAA Championships and work with the evaluation of the officials," he said. "I'm excited about going." Steers recently concluded administering the 2001 Southern Conference Championships at "Mat Jam," a compellation of three conference championships at one site, as the Southern, Colonial and Atlantic Coast conferences all met at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, March 2-3. He was also involved with the NCAA Championship's wildcard selections and conducted the conference's tournament seeding meeting.A stellar wrestler during his years as a cadet, Steers, a 1968 graduate who was enshrined in The Citadel's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1980, is the only Bulldog to win three consecutive Southern Conference titles (1966-68). He led the '67 team to its only conference championship, and holds the distinction of never being defeated in a dual-match during his collegiate career. He was named the Southern Conference's Wrestler-of-the-Year in 1967.Prior to entering athletic administration, Steers, a native of Silver Spring, MD, enjoyed coaching successes at William & Mary, East Carolina and at the U.S. Military Academy (West Point). At Army, he was named the New York Collegiate Coach-of-the-Year in 1980, '82 and '86, and was inducted into the New York Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.Steers will not be the lone Citadel representative at this year's NCAA Championships as two Bulldogs have qualified to compete. Mike Regner, the current 174-pound Southern Conference champion and Robby Bell, who won the All-Academy Championship at the 157-pount class and who was a runner-up at the conference tournament, earned a wild card spot. Citadel coach Rob Hjerling will accompany Regner and Bell to Iowa City.
