UNCG Edges College of Charleston

Charleston, SC -- Jennifer Harts basket with 31 seconds left put UNC Greensboro up for good as the Spartans defeated CofC 53-52 in the Cougars final regular season game Friday night in front of 479 at the John Kresse Arena. The win moves UNCG to 20-7 overall and 14-4 in Southern Conference action, while CofC drops to 11-16 overall and 7-11 in SoCon play.

The Spartans held a 25-22 advantage at halftime, but the Cougars fought back and took the lead at 50-49 at the 1:59 mark of the second half on Brittney Scarberrys made free throw. Samika Foster hit a jumper with 1:34 left, and after Scarberry missed a jumper, Hart scored to put UNCG up for good at 53-50. After Becky Wollenberg missed a three-pointer, Scarberry hit a jumper for the final margin.

ChoRhonda Gwaltney led the Spartans with 11 points, and Katie DelCampo and Sandi Reid each grabbed seven rebounds in the win. UNCG shot 33.3 percent (19-57) from the field, 28.6 percent (2-7) from three-point range and 65.0 percent (13-20) from the free throw line.

For the Cougars, Scarberry scored 20 points and tallied nine rebounds, while Wilma Simpson added nine rebounds. CofC shot 38.5 percent (20-52) from the field, 17.6 percent (3-17) from behind the arc and 100.0 percent (9-9) from the charity stripe.

Charlestons seed in the Southern Conference tournament will not be decided until Monday night pending the outcome of the East Tennessee State game at Furman. UNCG is a lock as the third seed. The tournament begins Thursday, March 1 and continues through Sunday, March 4.
