Women's Basketball 2/23/2001 8:30:00 PM Southern Conference Women's Hoops Round-Up for February 24 Chattanooga 76, Wofford 68Spartanburg, SC -- Miranda Warfield scored a career-high 30 points to go with seven rebounds in leading the Chattanooga women's basketball team to a 76-68 victory over Wofford this afternoon in Spartanburg, S.C. After Wofford had pulled within 69-68 on a Nancy Dubuisson layup with 3:33 to play, Warfield hit a jumper on the next possession to build the UTC margin back to 71-68 and begin a 7-0 Chattanooga run to close the contest. The game's biggest basket came when Warfield hit a 3-pointer to give UTC a 74-68 lead with 1:12 remaining. Damita Bullock hit a pair of free-throws with 34 seconds left to provide the final margin. Jenny Nett topped Wofford with 21 points and nine rebounds while Dubuisson and Natalie Walsh each scored 12 points. The Lady Terriers shot 49.1 percent while the Lady Mocs were at 46.7. Wofford held a 36-31 rebounding edge but committed 19 turnovers to just 12 for UTC. With the victory, Chattanooga (21-6, 15-3) clinches the No. 1-seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Tournament. Wofford (10-17, 6-12) saw a two-game winning streak end. Georgia Southern 74, Davidson 56STATESBORO, Ga. - Senior Amy Krach scored a season-high 18 to lead Georgia Southern to a 74-56 victory over Davidson and a share of the Southern Conference regular season championship in women's basketball action Saturday night at Hanner Fieldhouse. Krach, who was playing in her final home game for Georgia Southern, connected on seven of 17 field goals and two free throws in leading the Lady Eagles. Junior Sarah McCary added 13 points and 12 rebounds for her third career double-double while senior Lauren Langley finished with 10 points. Georgia Southern's third senior, Sharon Mitchell, finished the contest with eight points and 12 rebounds. Davidson was led by Janna Magette with 15 points on six of 13 shooting. Kim Taylor added 14 points for the Wildcats while Robyn Flewelling poured in 13. Kelly Copland led Davidson in rebounding with 10. Krach scored Georgia Southern's first seven points as the Lady Eagles raced to a 23-6 lead midway through the first half. Davidson attempted to fight back as it cut the deficit to 32-23 with 4:52 remaining in the first stanza. However, Georgia Southern against pushed the lead to 14 before claiming a 41-29 halftime lead. Davidson attempted one last run at the beginning of the second half, cutting the Lady Eagle advantage to 43-35 with two Robyn Flewelling free throws with 17:31 remaining. However, Georgia Southern responded with a 13-2 run to claim a 56-37 advantage. The Lady Eagle lead ballooned to as much as 27 before Davidson closed the game on a 9-0 run. Georgia Southern improved to 21-6 overall and 15-3 in the Southern Conference, giving the Lady Eagles a share of the Southern Conference regular season championship with Chattanooga. Georgia Southern will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Tournament in Greenville, S.C. and will play Friday evening at 5:00 p.m. in Timmons Arena against the winner of Thursday's Charleston/Appalachian State first round game. Davidson fell to 9-18 and 4-14 in the Southern Conference. Davidson will be the No. 9 seed in the tournament and will play No. 8 Wofford at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday in Timmons Arena. Western Carolina 80, Appalachian State 74 Cullowhee, N.C. Western Carolina extended its win streak to three after defeating Appalachian State Saturday afternoon 80-74. Seniors April Fleck and Kris Kent played thier final game in the Ramsey Center. Fleck recorded six steals in the game to set the school record for career steals. She has a career total of 240. Junior Laura Echols led the way in scoring with 28. She was joined by three others in double figures, freshmen Janetta Heggins and Tiffany Hamm with 14 and 12 respectively. Fleck also recorded double figures with 11 points. A pair of free throws by Echols gave Western the 30-28 lead for the final time with 3:57 remaining in the game. The two teams entered the half with WCU over Appalachian State 37-31. The Mountaineers threatened a comeback with 11:16 remaining in the game when they brought the it within one (51-50). WCU paced the Mountaineers for the remainder of the game, both team scored 43 points in the second half. ASU had four in double figures, Natasha Lettsome with 18, Laura Edwards with 20, Ashleigh Fuller with 11 and Aisha Bryant with 10. Appalachian falls to 5-22 overall and 3-15 in the SoCon. The Lady Cats finish the regular season with a 13-14 overall record and 7-11 in league play. ASU finishes the regular season 5-22, 3-15 in the conference.
