UNCG Wrestlers Fall To NC State

GREENSBORO -- After UNCG won the opening bout, NC State won the next seven matches on the way to a 27-9 victory over the Spartans in their season finale Feb. 20 in Fleming Gym. UNCG dropped its second straight match to end the regular season at 5-8 overall, while the Wolfpack improved to 11-7 with their seven win in their last eight outings.

Freshman Joe Scolaro returned from an illness to record the opening win of the night, an 8-1 decision over Luigi Tranchese at 157 that gave UNCG a 3-0 lead. Nate Parmenter looked to increase the lead as his 165 match with Philip Davanzo appeared headed for overtime, but Davanzo recorded a two-point takedown with just 20 seconds left for a 4-2 decision and tie the score at 3-3. Dustin Kana pinned Terry Garbis in 4:30 at 174 to move NC State out to a 9-3 lead.

Jason Gore took a 5-2 decision over Luke Bialy at 184 and Zach Breitenbach took a 14-3 major decision over Wallace DuVall at 197 to increase the lead to 16-3. Heavyweight John Kimble led his match against Ricky Fowler 2-1 until Fowlers two-point takedown with just 2.5 seconds on the clock gave him a 3-2 decision and the Wolfpack a commanding 19-3 advantage.

Wade Cecil won just his second dual match of the season, 7-3 over Kenny Alphin at 133, while senior Corey Williams won his last match in Fleming Gym, 4-2 over Oraefo Brown at 141.

"I was pleased with the way 60 percent of the kids wrestled tonight," said UNCG coach Denny Moore. "But my concern going into the conference tournament is that 40 percent didn't show they learned anything from our loss to Chattanooga (40-0)."

The Spartans will next compete in the SoCon Championships, which are being held as part of the 2001 Mat Jam in Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill, NC. The Mat Jam, which includes the championships for three conferences (Southern, ACC, Colonial), begins at 11 am Saturday, March 3.
