Wofford Women Win At Appalachian State

Boone, N.C.- The Appalachian State womens basketball team lost the final contest of the season to Wofford by a score of 73-49 Feb. 20 in Holmes Convocation Center. The Mountaineers (5-21, 3-14) honored seniors Jamie Gagliano (Hermitage, Tenn.), Sharonda Green (Greensboro, N.C.) and Natasha Lettsome (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) before the game. The Terriers (10-16, 6-11) end a two-game road swing with two victories to break the eight-game losing streak that began after the last meeting between these teams on January 20.

Wofford jumped two an early 6-0 lead before Appalachians Laura Edwards (Salisbury, N.C.) notched the first two ASU points at the 16:28 mark. The Terriers started out the first minutes of the game on a 13-4 run. At 13:29, Rebecca Norris (Rocky Mount, N.C.) nailed a three-point basket to get Appalachian back in the game, but despite the efforts of the Mountaineers, the Terriers still managed to hold a strong lead, by as much a t times as 14 points. At the half, the score read 22-35, Wofford.

The Terriers went on a 5-0 run to begin the second half. Gagliano hit a jumper at 17:59 to spur the Mountaineers on a 17-2 run that cut the Wofford lead to three. In that time, Lettsome scored seven, and both Aisha Bryant (Durham, N.C.) and Norris contributed three-pointers. Wofford broke away again, however, and managed to hold on to a 14-point lead at the 8:41 mark, despite a three-minute scoring drought. The Terriers put the g ame away by going on a 31-10 run to close out the contest.

Two Terriers scored in double figures: Jenny Nett had 21 points and Stephanie Adelaine notched 11. Natalie Walsh turned in eight assists.

For the Mountaineers, honored senior Lettsome logged her tenth double-double performance of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while nabbing the ball four times. Gagliano notched nine points and had six assists.
