LEXINGTON, Va. -- VMI 125 lb. wrestler Juan Sanchez (Alexandria, Va./ Hayfield) defeated UNC Greensboro's Tony Stewart in the final match of Saturday afternoon's match against the Spartans (5-6, 2-2 SoCon), but failed to record a pin as the VMI wrestling team (1-9, 1-2 SoCon) was defeated by a score of 24-22 on Feb. 10 at Cocke Hall.
The Keydets got out to the lead as sophomore Levi Spellman (Canfield, Ohio/ Canfield) defeated UNCG's Wade Cecil, 8-5. After a Keydet forfeit, sophomore Adam Britt (Mechanicsville, Va./ Atlee) scored a major decision over Spartan Anthony Warren by a score of 16-8, giving the Keydets a 7-6 lead. Britt is now 10-1 in dual matches and holds an overall record of 26-7 on the season. Keydet freshman Tony Peters (Boring, Ore./ Sam Barlow) followed that up with a win of his own, beating UNCG's Gregg Fox, 7-4 at the 157 lb. class.
After a UNCG pin and major decision, VMI's freshman Jason Cox (Amherst, Va./ Amherst County) and junior Brian Toney (Boones Mill, Va./ Franklin County) gained victories and the 184 and 197 lb. weight classes respectively to give the Keydets a 17-16 lead. Keydet freshman heavyweight Curtis Booth (Poquoson, Va./ Poquoson) then was pinned by Spartan John Kimble in 12 seconds, setting up the final match of the day.
"We won six out of nine matches," said VMI head coach John Trudgeon. "It really hurt us not to have Jacob Inge (who hurt his arm on Friday night). We gave it our all and wrestled well."
The Keydets will travel to The Citadel next Saturday afternoon for a match that will begin at 1:00.
