VMI Wrestling Coach John Trudgeon Wins 100th Match (Dec. 7)

Keydets Defeat Old Dominion, 30-10; Fall at N.C. State, 22-15

RALEIGH, NC -- In defeating Old Dominion (0-3), 30-10 at the N.C. State duals on Saturday afternoon, VMI head wrestling coach John Trudgeon won the 100th match of his career. Earlier in the day, the Keydets (1-2) lost to N.C. State (4-0) by a score of 22-15 at Reynolds Coliseum. Trudgeon is in his 17th season in coaching, all at VMI.

In defeating Old Dominion, the Keydets registered wins in seven of the 10 matches, including technical falls by freshman 149-pounder Mike Parsons (Loudonville, Ohio/ Lakeville) and 14th-ranked junior 174-pounder Matt Ewrin (South Vienna, Ohio/ St. Paris Graham). Parsons scored a 17-0 win over ODU's Brad Alford, while Erwin won by a 24-8 count against John Adams. Freshman Jason Kontopedes (Beaverdam, Va/ Boys Ranch (Texas)) pinned Casey Todd in 55 seconds at the 157 lb. class.

Senior 133-pounder Oliver Ruiz (Fairview, N.J./ Cliffside Park) and freshman 141-pounder Mark DiSalvo (Dayton, Ohio/ Dayton Carroll) recorded major decisions. Ruiz defeated Payton Lamb, 14-4, while DiSalvo won a 15-5 decision over Matt Epps.

In the loss to N.C. State, the Keydets took a 15-4 lead over the homestanding Wolfpack, before surrendering the final five matches in the seven-point loss. 17th-ranked junior Adam Britt (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) recorded a pin for the Keydets at the 157 lb. class, taking down Phil Davanzo in 4:04.

The Keydets will travel to Evanston, Ill., to compete in the prestigious Midlands Tournament December 29 and 30 at Northwestern University.
