Owens Leads Davidson at Sunshine Open (Dec. 29)

FT. LAUDERDALE, FL - Senior Ryan Owens' fifth place finish in the 141-pound division highlighted the Davidson wrestling team results at the Sunshine Open, held at the Broward County Convention Center in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Owens went 4-2 in the two-day tournament while picking up two victories by way of fall. He defeated John Peterson from Augsburg Gray, 10-5, in the fifth-place match.

Fellow senior Jeff Bender, as well as sophomore Mo Idlibi, competed in the 157-pound bracket. Both wrestlers notched wins in the wrestlebacks. Idlibi pinned Todd Allen of Cumberland at 3:52 while Bender's win came by way of a 7-2 decision.

Sophomore Mark O'Hair (165 pounds) and freshman Brandon Zeigler (197) were the only other Davidson wrestlers to compete. Each finished 1-2 at the Sunshine Open, but both won their first-round contests.

The Wildcats turn their attention back to dual meet action next Saturday, Jan. 5, when Davidson travels to Gettysburg to take on the host Bullets and Pensacola Christian.
