Davidson Men's Soccer Falls to No. 21 Furman 1-0 On Senior Night

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson men's soccer team fell short in its upset bid as No. 21 Furman picked up a 1-0 victory in an exciting Southern Conference match Saturday evening at Richardson Stadium. The Wildcats fall to 9-7 overall and 4-2 in SoCon play while the Paladins improve to 13-4 on the season and a perfect 7-0 in league action.

Furman controlled the offensive end of the field in the first half of play, but were unable to convert any chances until late in the first period. A Davidson defender took down a Paladin defender in the penalty box resulting in a penalty kick. Furman's Anthony Esquivel converted the penalty kick to give the Paladins the 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute of play.

Davidson came out in the second half and played spirited ball in attempt to make a comeback. Furman had the first real scoring chance in the period, but sophomore David Peoples (Englewood, Colo.) kicked the ball off the end line to keep the score 1-0.

With just over 18 minutes to play in the contest, senior Jon Tetirick (Cincinnati, Ohio) had an excellent breakaway opportunity, but Furman's goalkeeper, Scott Blount, scooped the ball and the momentum away. Davidson had another chance to put the ball in the back of the net as Andy Chase of Furman picked up a yellow card and gave the Wildcats a free kick from 20 yards out.

However, the cannon-shot off of senior midfielder Erik Ozimek (Columbia, S.C.) was caught by Blount to preserve the shutout.

Davidson will close out its home schedule on Wednesday, November 7 as it hosts the Terriers of Wofford College at 7:00. Furman finishes the regular season at UNC Greensboro on November 10 at 7:00.

CARTER'S GOAL LIFTS APPALACHIAN STATE MEN'S SOCCER PAST VMI, 2-1

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Midfielder Alex Carter scored the eventual game-winner at the 46:55 mark of the second half, as Appalachian State men's soccer defeated VMI, 2-1 Saturday afternoon on senior day at Patchin Field.

Appalachian State(9-7, 4-4 SoCon) got on the board first when midfielder Fredrik Henrikson scored when he followed up a Jordy Broder shot that hit the post. Henrikson's goal was his seventh of the season.

VMI (6-9-1, 3-4-1 SoCon) would tie it the match at 1-1, when junior forward Daniel Whitehall (Royal Palm Beach, Fla. / Suncoast) scored his ninth goal on the season off an assist from Ross Davis (Baton Rouge, La. / Woodlawn).
Whitehall has now scored five straight goals for the Keydets in the last three matches.

VMI will close out the regular season on Friday, November 9 against College of Charleston at 6 p.m. in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., while Appalachian State will close out their regular season on November 10 at Winthrop.


Cougars, Bulldogs Fall at Carolina Youth Development Classic

Charleston, SC -- Charlie Roberts scored at 27:30 to lift Coastal Carolina to a 2-0 victory over the College of Charleston in the Carolina Youth Development Center Men's Soccer Classic Saturday at Patriots Point.

The Chanticleers, leading 1-0 at the break, capped off the scoring when Joseph Ngwenya scored on an assist from Thomas Rutter with less than six minutes remaining. The Cougars dropped to 4-10-1 on the season while Coastal Carolina improved to 7-6-1. The College of Charleston suffered the loss despite outshooting Coastal Carolina 19-16.

CofC returns to action on November 9, in its regular finale at Patriots Point versus Southern Conference foe VMI.

In Saturday's night cap, Elon got goals from five different players as the Phoenix cruised to a 5-1 win over The Citadel. The Phoenix, 7-9-0, opened the scoring when Paul Bellaqua hammered home a pass from Robert Latimer less than three minutes into the match.

Trailing 2-0 at the half, Citadel scored its only goal of the match when Cody Bragg found the back of the net at 68:47. Elon added goals by Robert Latimer, Stuart Reid and Kyle Edwards in the last twenty minutes for the final margin. The Citadel, 0-14-0 on the season, was outshot by Elon 29-17.

Cougars, Coastal Grab Wins In Carolina Youth Classic

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. -- Jeff Files' goal from about 15 yards out with just under 33 minutes remaining lifted the College of Charleston to a 1-0 win over Elon in the second game of the Carolina Youth Development Center Men's Soccer Classic before 468 at Patriots Point Field Friday night.

With the win the Cougars improved to 4-9-1, while the Phoenix fell to 6-9.

Files scored the game's only goal when he found the back of the net with 32:53 left in the match off an assist from Ricardo Diaz Granados for a 1-0 advantage.

In the opener, Coastal Carolina defeated The Citadel, 4-1, behind an own goal by Citadel and scores from Tobin Whitmarsh, Mike Littlefield and Joseph Ngwenya.

With the win the Chanticleers improved to 6-6-1, while the Bulldogs fell to 0-13.

Coastal took a 1-0 lead at the 29:06 mark on a Citadel own goal. Ngwenya served the box where the Bulldogs' Robert Burnham deflected the pass into the left corner of the Citadel goal for the early Chanticleer advantage.

Coastal stretched the margin to 2-0 with 17:10 remaining on a penalty kick goal by Whitmarsh. The Bulldogs cut the margin to 2-1 with 11:29 left on a goal by Cody Bragg.

Littlefield scored with 10:12 left, and Ngwenya tallied with 8:12 remaining for the final margin.

The final day of the Classic is set for Saturday with College of Charleston taking on Coastal Carolina at 2:00, followed by Elon and The Citadel.
