ASU Women's Soccer Falls to Liberty, 2-1 in OT

LYNCHBURG, VA-Junior forward Katie Woodrow scored a goal 5:42 into overtime to give the Liberty women's soccer team a 2-1 overtime victory over the Appalachian State Mountaineers at the Liberty Soccer Field Tuesday afternoon.

After the two teams battled through a scoreless first half, the Lady Flames(4-4) took a 1-0 lead when freshman midfielder Liz Rudolph scored off assists from Jenny Davis and Emily Shubin at the 58:34 mark. Appalachian State (3-3-3) tied the game when Jennifer Rudy (Etiwanda, Calif.) scored off an assist from teammate Mavis Clapp (Knoxville, Tenn.) 82:58 into the game. Woodrow's game-winner came off an assist from Shubin off a free kick.

Liberty freshman goalkeeper Natalie Mayer saved three shots in picking up the win for the Lady Flames. ASU goalkeeper Breland Meany (Hoover, Ala.) saved two shots in the losing effort.

The Mountaineers take to the field again on Friday at UNC Wilmington. Kick-off is set for 7:00 pm.


The Citadel Shuts Out Coker, 2-0

HARTSVILLE, SC -- Coker took a tough 2-0 defeat at home to The Citadel Tuesday night in women's collegiate soccer.

Coker attacked the Bulldog defense time after time but was upstaged by an outstanding performance from Citadel keeper Jessica Walters. Walters made several spectacular saves on shots that appeared to be sure goals. The Bulldogs went ahead 1-0 with 11 minutes remaining in the first half when Kelly Pesterfield got behind the Cobra defense and beat senior Amy Kessler one-on-one.

As the game wore on Coker continued to crank up the pressure in search of the equalizer. Freshman Erin Blevins had a great chance with only the keeper to beat but Walters proved up to the challenge.

Later, sophomore Toni Crowel had another point-blank shot that Walters again stopped with a diving save. The Bulldogs got their second goal with 1:26 remaining on a quick counterattack against the pressing Cobras. Pesterfield got her second goal with a shot from 25 yards out that just made it past the outstretched hands of Kessler.

Coker out-shot The Citadel 16-5 but Watters was up to the pressure, comingup with 10 saves in goal. Kessler started and played 90 minutes with seven saves of her own.

The Citadel plays again Sunday, October 7 at 2:00 on Summerall Field against Davidson. The match was originally scheduled for Sept. 15, but was rescheduled due to the tragedies in New York and Washington, D.C.
