EAGLES FIND SHOOTING TOUCH TO DOWN WOFFORD, 4-1
Four Eagles tally a goal and an assist

Statesboro, Ga. - Georgia Southern used four Eagles with a goal and assist each to defeat Wofford 4-1 in Southern Conference action at Eagle Field.

Wofford (3-7-1, 0-3-1 SoCon) got on the board first when Shay Koch delivered his first goal of the season off a corner kick from Tim Mittman in the 33rd minute.

Georgia Southern (5-8, 2-3 SoCon) came back with a goal in the 35th minute of play when freshman Devin Mizell found the corner of the net for his second score of the season. Jeff Russell and Tommy Irwin earned assists.

Irwin later broke the tie in the second half when he slammed a shot past Wofford keeper Eric Williams off a cross from Moffat for his second goal on the year.

GSU extended the lead to 3-1 when a Irwin shot was blocked by Williams to Russell, who scored a put-back one-timer. The Eagles tacked on the final score when Mizell fed Moffat down the left flank for Moffat's team-leading sixth tally of the season.

"We played a very good Wofford team today," said Kevin Chambers. "We worked hard in practice this week and this was the result of that work."

Georgia Southern's Garret Lazenby and Williams each recorded six saves on the afternoon, while the Eagles outshot the Terriers 19-11.

The Eagles return to action on Sunday when they host Jacksonville in a non-conference tilt at 2:00 pm in Statesboro.

SHORTHANDED CLEMSON STUNS FURMAN IN MEN'S SOCCER IN DOUBLE OT

GREENVILLE -- The 15th ranked Furman men's soccer team was defeated 3-2 in double overtime Wednesday night at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium by the 11th ranked Clemson Tigers in front of 2,811 spectators.

Playing with only nine players since the 87:18 mark in the second half, Clemson's Steven Rhyne collected a ball near midfield and outraced the Furman defense before drilling a shot past Furman keeper Scott Blount at the 111:40 mark.

After an electric first half in which both Furman and Clemson scored twice, Clemson's Eric Lewis received his second yellow card of the match at the 59:15 mark of the second half. Clemson played down a man for the next 29 minutes until Kevin Conaway was cited with a red card with 2:42 remaining in regulation to bring Clemson to nine players.

Furman controlled the overtimes, but was unable to find the back of the net, while Clemson seemed to be content to escape with a tie until Rhyne's heroics.

"We should have taken care of business today," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "We have got to win these games, especially with an advantage like that. We just didn't do a good job of finding the free men on the attack. Clemson fought hard today. We must regroup and focus on the rest of the season."

A total of 74 fouls were whistled in the match as Clemson committed 42 fouls to Furman's 32. The Paladins outshot the Tigers 17-10 on the match.

Clemson opened the scoring in the first half as Paul Souders knocked in a shot at the 11:28 mark after collecting a cleared ball. Furman's Patrick Tanner evened the count eight minutes later as he scissor kicked a ball in after receiving a Jack Handy cross.

The Tigers regained the lead at the 29:08 mark as Souders added his second goal of the night off an assist from Ian Fuller as his sliding shot from 20 yards outt found the back of the net. Furman's Anthony Esquivel evened the score for Furman at the 34:01 mark as he collected a loose ball in front of the net and shot it into an open goal.

Furman falls to 9-3 on the season, while Clemson improves to 9-3. The Paladins entered the match ranked 15th in the nation, while Clemson was 11th.

Furman will return to action Friday night at 8:00 p.m. against conference foe VMI, while Clemson will host Davidson Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

Men's Soccer Falls Short In Upset Bid; Wildcats Lose To No. 19 Wake Forest, 2-1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Davidson men's soccer team fell short of its upset bid Wednesday night at Spry Stadium. Davidson held a 1-0 lead late in the match, but ultimately dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 19 Wake Forest before a crowd of 480 fans.

Davidson broke into the scoring column first as senior striker Chris Norbet (Belleville, Ill.) volleyed the ball into the back of the net 52 minutes into the match. Norbet received the ball midway through the box from senior midfielder Erik Ozimek (Columbia, S.C.).

The Demon Deacons' Jeremiah White scored with 14:39 left in the match to knot the score, 1-1. White took advantage of a flurry of action in the box to put the ball freshman goalie Bart Creasman (Lake Mary, Fla.) who was unable to make the diving stop.

Vicente Basitdas of Wake Forest scored the team's second goal of the night in the 82nd minute to give the Demon Deacons the 2-1 edge and ultimately its game-winning goal

The Wildcats had their best scoring opportunity of the match before the teams had a chance to settle into the second period. Senior Justin Saunders (Lexington, Ky.) slotted the ball to a streaking freshman Dan Ferriter (Fort Benning, Ga.) who just missed scoring the game's first goal.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first half, however it wasn't for a lack of trying by both squads.

The Wildcats had two strong scoring opportunities in the first 45 minutes as shots from senior Chris Norbet (Belleville, Ill.) and Ferriter both sailed just wide of the goal. Wake Forest forced freshman goalie Bart Creasman (Lake Mary, Fla.) to make four saves in the first stanza, but were unable to find the back of the net either.

Statisically, the Demon Deacons held the edge in shots, 15-6, while Davidson had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. Creasman finished the night with four saves.

Davidson will face its second ACC opponent of the week when they travel to Clemson, S.C. to take on the Clemson Tigers. The match will be played at Riggs Field on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 3:30.
