VMI SOCCER UPSETS DAVIDSON 1-0

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman midfielder Kyle Clark (Emmaus, Pa. / Emmaus) scored the lone goal of the match at the 50:20 mark of the second half as the VMI soccer team upset Davidson, 1-0 in Southern Conference soccer action this afternoon at Patchin Field.

The win over Davidson was the first over the Wildcats since Oct. 23, 1982. Also, the 2-0-1 start in the Southern Conference is the best start ever for VMI soccer in conference play.

Keydet goalkeeper John Simmons (Chillicothe, Ohio / Chillicothe) recorded six saves on the afternoon in recording his third shutout of the season.

VMI(4-5-1, 2-0-1 SoCon) will next return to action on Tuesday at 4 p.m. against SoCon foe UNC Greensboro at Patchin Field, while Davidson (8-4, 3-1 SoCon) travels to Wake Forest for a match on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

FURMAN DROPS TOUGH LOSS TO UAB 2-1
BIRMINGHAM, AL -- The 13th ranked Furman men's soccer team lost to eighth-ranked UAB on Sunday afternoon 2-1 in Birmingham, Alabama at West Campus Field.

Flavio Monteiro stole the ball off a goal kick and scored in the 74th minute to lift UAB to the 2-1 win. Monteiro also assisted Rogerio Oliveira on the Blazers first goal at the 23:33 mark. Oliveira got the goal inside the left post from Monteiro's cross pass from the right side. That gave UAB a 1-0 halftime lead.

Furman's lone goal came from senior Matt Goldsmith on a shot from 15 yards out at the 53:03 mark. Sergei Radd had an assist on the goal.

The Blazers held on to win a very physical match that produced a combined 40 fouls, five yellow cards, and two red cards.

Furman fell to 9-2 on the season while UAB improved to 10-1. The Paladins will return home to Eugene Stone Soccer III Stadium on Wednesday night to battle Upstate rival Clemson at 7:00.



JAMES GOODMAN LEADS UNCG TO 3-0 WIN OVER GEORGIA STATE IN ADIDAS/SPARTAN CLASSIC

Greensboro, NC - UNCG's James Goodman scored two goals to pace the Spartans in a 3-0 victory over Georgia State in the 2001 adidas/Spartan Classic on Sunday afternoon at a rain soaked UNCG Soccer Stadium.

Both teams struggled for footing and control in the games early moments as the rain poured onto the field, making playing conditions rugged at best. Head official Alex Almagur stopped play for nearly 30 minutes at the 15:17 mark in the first half when lightning was spotted.

"We were definitely concerned with the weather at the start of the game," head coach Michael Parker said. "Those type of conditions have a way of slowing down play and making every play a lottery."

Once play resumed and conditions improved, UNCG (6-5-0, 4-1 Southern Conference) took control of the match. Goodman (Fr./Palm City, FL) got the Spartans on the board at the 32:14 mark, off an assist from Chris Goos (Jr./Houston, TX). After intermission, Goos then scored his fourth goal of the season. Kenny Bundy (Jr./Bixby, OK) was credited with the assist. Goodman finished the scoring with his sixth goal of the season at the 82:55 mark. Bundy recorded his second assist of the match on the goal.

"We knew this was a game we could and should win, so we wanted to get it in," Parker added. "Once the weather broke and the playing conditions improved, I felt we controlled the pace of the game and played very well."

UNCG's Charlie DeMello (Jr./Shreveport, LA) recorded four saves in goal en route to picking up the win. Georgia State's Will Chaple played well and recorded seven saves on the day. With the loss, the Panthers fall to 6-5-0 on the season.
