Terriers Pick Up Win Over Lipscomb, 5-3
Oct. 12, 2001

Marcus Talbert and Chris O'Neill scored two goals each Friday afternoon as the Wofford men's soccer team defeated visiting Lipscomb, 5-3, on Snyder Field.

The Terriers opened the scoring just 3:52 into the game, when a Lipscomb foul led to a penalty kick by O'Neill. The junior converted on the kick for his third goal of the season. The Bisons, however, answered almost immediately. Josh Cline snuck one past Wofford keeper Eric Williams to tie the score, 1-1, at the 4:39 mark. Freshman Zach Strable scored in the 17th minute off of an assist from Chris Findley and Michael Gonzales to put Wofford back in the lead, 2-1.

Neither team would score again until just five minutes remained in the half. Talbert picked up the first of his two at 40:42, off of a pass by J.D. Caldwell. Talbert scored again less than two minutes later on an assist from John Hamilton. Lipscomb's Jacob Smith scored on a rebound shot at 44:58 to close the half with Wofford in the lead, 4-2.

The Bisons scored again just two minutes into the second half to close their deficit to just one, 4-3. Evan King made an unassisted assault on the goal and slipped it past Wofford freshman keeper Zach Vogt. O'Neill closed out the scoring at 54:58 on an assist by Shane Kerr.

Williams came up with four saves for the Terriers, while Vogt had one. Lipscomb's Bryan Ayer, who played the full 90 minutes, had five saves. The Terriers outshot the Bisons, 26-10, on the afternoon.

With the win, Wofford improves to 3-7-1 on the season. Lipscomb falls to 1-10. Wofford has a five-day break, and will resume play on Oct. 17th with a 4 p.m. match at Southern Conference rival Georgia Southern. Lipscomb will next travel to Winthrop for a 1 pm match on Sunday.

#18 SOUTH FLORIDA NEEDS OVERTIME TO KNOCK OFF UNCG IN ADIDAS/SPARTAN CLASSIC
#9 North Carolina downs Georgia State in opener, 7-0

Greensboro, NC - South Florida's Brian Mullins scored off a UNCG deflection in the game's 101st minute to give the 18th-ranked Bulls a 2-1 overtime victory over UNCG in the 2001 adidas/Spartan Classic on Friday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium.

South Florida (10-1-0) got on the board first in the match as Brandon Streicher scored at the 32:43 mark to give the Bulls a 1-0 advantage. Both teams saw plenty of good goal scoring opportunities, but splendid saves by both goalkeepers kept the score at 1-0 until the intermission. UNCG (5-5-0 overall, 4-1 Southern Conference) picked up the pace of the game in the second half. The Spartans saw four shots on goal go off the pipes before Jeff Lochrie (So./Austin, TX) scored at the 81:09 mark to tie the game at one goal apiece. The goal was Lochrie's first of the season, and first of his career. Chris Goos (Jr./Houston, TX) recorded the assist for the Spartans.

The game remained knotted at 1-1 through the end of regulation. In overtime however, South Florida's Brian Mullins found open space on the right wing, and fired a shot that Spartan's goalkeeper, Charlie DeMello (Jr./Shreveport, LA), appeared to be in position for, but deflected off a Spartan defender into the left corner of the net for the dramatic victory.

With the loss, the Spartans fall to 2-3 all-time in the adidas/Spartan Classic. All five UNCG losses this season have been by one goal.

The adidas/Spartan Classic will resume on Sunday, October 14. At 1 pm, the Tar Heels will take on the South Florida and UNCG will take on Georgia State at 3:30 pm. Tickets can be purchased at the gate, which is located on the south side of the stadium directly beside the tennis courts. Adult admission is $5, while any person 16 years or younger qualify for the $3 youth ticket. All UNCG students receive free admission with the presentation of their student ID.
