McLean Named To All-Region Team

UNCG women's soccer player Lynsey McLean was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Southeast Region Team, the NSCAA announced Monday, December 5. It was McLean's first selection to the all-region team, and the first all-region selection for UNCG since the 1998 season.

McLean, a junior midfielder of Falkirk, Scotland, becomes just the fourth Spartan to earn First-Team All-Region honors in the team's Division I history (since 1991). The last player from UNCG to be named First-Team was All-American Ali Lord, a selection in 1996 and 1998.

McLean earned Southern Conference Tournament MVP honors after scoring the championship game-winner on a penalty kick with just over six minutes remaining in a 1-0 win over top-seeded Furman November 5. The win gave UNCG its third SoCon title in four years. It was her third goal of the season, and the first two were also game-winning penalty kicks, in UNCG's 3-2 win at Charlotte September 9 and in a 2-0 win at Georgia Southern September 29.

She was also key in the Spartans' defensive effort this season, as she was matched up against the opposing team's top offensive player in the midfield, and helped the Spartans post 11 shutouts and a 1.19 team goals against average. Last month, she was named to the All-SoCon First Team for the second time, and became the first Spartan to earn All-SoCon honors three times.

McLean was the only SoCon player on the First Team. NCAA Champion UNC Chapel Hill and Clemson each placed three on the team. A pair of Furman forwards, Emily Turgeon and Melissa Turner, were named to the Second Team.

UNCG had one of its most successful seasons in 2000, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after a 3-2 overtime upset of No. 21 William & Mary at home in the first round. The Spartans lost their second round game at No. 14 Virginia. UNCG also captured its third SoCon championship in four years., and finished with a 14-8-1 overall record, 6-2 in the SoCon. The team was No. 7 in the Southeast Region in the final Soccer Buzz poll.
