Women's Soccer 12/29/2000 8:54:00 PM Southern Conference UNCG Players Earn All-Region Honors UNCG women's soccer player Lynsey McLean was named to the Soccer Buzz All-Southeast Region Second Team, while teammate Kathryn Clewley was a Third-Team selection, it was announced last week. They were the first Spartans honored by Soccer Buzz since Ali Lord was a First Team selection in 1998.McLean, a junior midfielder of Falkirk, Scotland, was also named NSCAA First Team All-Southeast this month. This is her first selection to Soccer Buzz's All-Region team. As a freshman in 1997, she was a Southeast Region All-Freshman selection.McLean earned Southern Conference Tournament MVP honors after scoring the championship game-winner on a penalty kick with just over six minutes remaining in a 1-0 win over top-seeded Furman November 5. The win gave UNCG its third SoCon title in four years. It was her third goal of the season. McLean was also key in the Spartan's defensive effort this season, as she helped the Spartans post 11 shutouts and a 1.19 team goals against average. In November, she was named to the All-SoCon First Team for the second time and became the first Spartan to earn All-SoCon honors three times.Clewley's third-team selection is her first All-Region honor at UNCG. An All-SoCon junior goalkeeper frrom Ontario, Canada, she turned in a record setting season, setting team records in season goals-against-average (0.84) and saves (94). She finished the season second all-time in career saves with 237, and her nine shutouts this season was second all-time. She is third in the team's history with 13 in her career. Her GAA in conference play was a league-best 0.39 and she allowed just one goal at home in eight games. Clewley missed the Spartans two NCAA tournament games when she was called up to the Canadian National Team to partake in the team's mini-camp and was on the roster when the team faced the U.S. National Team in Canadas 3-2 upset win November 14.UNCG had one of its most successful seasons in 2000, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after a 3-2 overtime upset of No. 21 William & Mary at home in the first round. The Spartans lost their second round game at No. 14 Virginia. UNCG also captured its third SoCon championship in four years., and finished with a 14-8-1 overall record, 6-2 in the SoCon, and was No. 7 in the Southeast Region in the final NSCAA poll.
